METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR DISPLAYING IMPROVED CURVE-BY-CURVE GUIDANCE FOR HARD CURVES IN A PERSONAL NAVIGATION DEVICE. Methods and systems allow personal navigation devices to warn drivers during turn-by-turn navigation instructions when they are approaching a difficult turn. Personal navigation devices can report to a server when a turn is missed during turn-by-turn instructions, including identifying turn and situation information. The server can aggregate missed turn reports from many personal navigation devices to generate a hard turn database. Personal navigation devices can access the hard turn database when generating turn-by-turn instructions to identify turns requiring improved instructions. The hard turn database can be stored on personal navigation devices, and/or can be kept on the server. Personal navigation devices can be configured to recognize when turns are intentionally missed, and only report missed turns when they determine that the turn was unintentionally missed. [0001] [0001] Personal navigation devices such as global positioning systems in use today provide turn-by-turn directions from the device's current location to a destination selected and recorded by the user. While some personal navigation devices allow the user to determine the level of warning provided by the device, most do not allow for such customization and always provide the same level of warning for each turn along a designated route. Even devices that allow a user to select the desired level of warning provide the selected level of warning for all curves, and do not have the ability to vary the level of warning provided without additional user registration. Some turns are simply easier to execute than others. Some turns are easily executed under certain circumstances, but become more difficult to execute under other circumstances such as heavy traffic or rain. Claims (15) [1] 1. A method of providing enhanced turn-by-turn instructions by a personal navigation device, comprising: accessing a database (106) of difficult turns to obtain a difficulty indication for a future turn along a planned route of travel (308), where the difficulty indication is calculated or based on lost curve statistics derived from lost curve reports; determine whether the indication of difficulty for the future curve exceeds a threshold (502); and issuing improved instructions for the future curve in response to the indication of difficulty for the future curve that exceeds the threshold (504). [2] The method of claim 1, wherein accessing the hard turns database comprises accessing a local hard turns database stored in the personal navigation device. [3] Method according to claim 2, in which accessing a database of difficult turns comprises accessing a local database of difficult turns stored in the personal navigation device using situation parameters which are selected from the group consisting of in time of day, day of year, weather conditions, outside temperature, traffic conditions, lighting conditions, travel speed, travel direction and vehicle type. [4] 4. Method according to claim 3, further comprising collecting information regarding one or more situation parameters, where accessing a local database of hard turns stored in the personal navigation device using situation parameters comprises accessing the database location of difficult curves using the collected information. [5] The method of claim 1, wherein the lost curve reports identify a curve that was lost during turn-by-turn instructions and information regarding situation parameters at the time the curve was lost. [6] Method according to claim 1, in which accessing a database of difficult curves comprises: sending a request for an indication of difficulty for a specific curve to a server where a database of difficult curves is maintained, the request identifying the curve; and receive a difficulty indication for the specific curve from the server. [7] The method of claim 1, wherein issuing enhanced instructions for the future turn comprises providing a user with one of: an early warning that a difficult turn is ahead; and information regarding the difficulty of the future curve. [8] The method of claim 1, further comprising determining from a local trigger database whether a personal navigation device user is familiar with the future curve, where the issuance of enhanced instructions for the future curve is performed. only if the user of the personal navigation device is not familiar with the future turn. [9] The method of claim 1, further comprising: determining whether one or more of the turns along the planned route exceeds a difficulty threshold; and planning a new route in response to one or more of the turns along the planned route exceeding a difficulty threshold. [10] The method of claim 1, further comprising: receiving at a server from a plurality of personal navigation devices lost turn reports, wherein the lost turn reports identify a turn that was missed during instructions curve-by-curve and information regarding the parameters of the situation at the moment the curve was lost; generating a difficult turns database by aggregating lost turn data received from the plurality of personal navigation devices; and provide personal navigation devices with access to the database generated from difficult turns. [11] The method of claim 10, further comprising: determining on a personal navigation device when a turn is missed during turn-by-turn instructions; determine if the lost curve was unintentionally missed; collect situation information related to the lost curve; and transmitting to the server a lost curve report identifying the time that was lost and including at least part of the collected situation information. [12] 12. Personal navigation device, comprising: means for accessing a database (106) of difficult turns to obtain a difficulty indication for a future turn along a planned route of course (308), wherein the difficulty indication is calculated or based on lost turns statistics. derived from lost curve reports; means for determining whether the indication of difficulty for the future curve exceeds a threshold (502); and means for issuing improved instructions for the future curve in response to the indication of difficulty for the curve ahead that exceeds the threshold (504). [13] The personal navigation device of claim 12, further comprising: means for determining when a turn is missed during turn-by-turn instructions; means to determine if the lost curve was unintentionally missed; means for collecting situation information relating to the lost curve; and means for transmitting to a server a lost curve report identifying the time that has been lost and including at least part of the collected situation information. [14] 14. Server, comprising: means for receiving from a plurality of personal navigation device reports of lost turns, where the lost turns reports identify a turn that was missed during turn-by-turn instructions and information regarding parameters of situation at the moment the curve was lost; means for generating a difficult turns database by aggregating lost turn data received from the plurality of personal navigation devices; and means to provide personal navigation devices with access to the generated database of difficult turns. [15] 15. A non-transient processor readable storage medium having stored therein processor executable instructions configured to cause a personal navigation device processor to perform operations comprising: accessing a database (106) of difficult-to-turn curves obtaining a difficulty indication for a future turn along a planned route of course (308), where the difficulty indication is calculated or based on missed turns statistics derived from missed turns reports; determine whether the indication of difficulty for the future curve exceeds a threshold (502); and issue improved instructions for the future curve in response to the indication of difficulty for the future curve to exceed the threshold (504).
